I might’ve lied to Fitz.

I brought him to Seattle for security.

The Organization flagged and traced a shipment that will be leaving from the Port of Miami. The FBI are going to intercept it, some of our agents will be there to support them. The deal is going down at any time. Nathan has been watching from the sky with a couple of drones.

Maes will be angry when the FBI and the local police stop it. He will need a lawyer, and I don’t want him to find Fitz.

He’s not going to lose his reputation because we got him involved in this mission.

We suspect that the shipment we’re targeting is several shipping containers full of merchandise that has been hollowed out and filled with cocaine. Strategically speaking, this is a fairly low-stakes mission to start out on and test the waters of how Maes will react.

It’s worth a lot of money and effort on his end, but there’s a very small chance of human casualties or loss of life.

Once we’re at my house, I apologize, “Sorry, but if you don’t mind, I have work to do. It’s only going to take a couple of hours.”

Unfortunately, the control room is the family room. I can’t avoid having him with me, even if I wanted to. The first thing I do is check in with Beacon and Nathan before I access my drone and start patrolling the area. If I could spend all my time piloting drones, I probably would. There’s something calming about being in complete control of the situation and masterminding the solutions for everyone.

“It’s kind of like a video game,” Fitz says, looking over my shoulder and squinting at the grayscale screen.

“It’s not a video game,” I grunt back at him. “Once we start, no talking.”

He performatively zips his lips, pulls up a chair to sit, and crosses his legs. He’s in casual streetwear today, clearly taking his day off from the firm as an excuse to wear some slim jeans and a t-shirt. His arms are far more exposed than usual, and I absolutely haven’t noticed how muscular they are.

They’re probably all vanity muscles anyways. I’ve only ever seen him run and do a few push-ups—I don’t think he’s much of a lifter. He’s quiet for all of twenty seconds.

“So, could you fly a real plane? Or a helicopter?”

I glance back at him pointedly, and he nods his head quickly, zipping his lips another time with two long fingers pressed against his thumb. He’s smiling as he does it, his lips full and pink.

His lips? Get a grip, Lang. I force my eyes back to the monitor and begin the breathing exercises I do before every mission flight.

To Fitz’s credit, once I’m maneuvering, he’s so quiet, I forget he’s behind me. I lose myself in the flow of my drone as I assess and reassess the situation for our two men on the ground. They place the explosives without a hitch, and I’m able to create enough distractions for them to get in and out so quickly they were hardly there at all.
